Thursday December 19, 2019 - Week in Review

Dear 6B Parents,

On Monday we started building for our Santa's Sleigh Challenge.  Using future human missions to Mars as inspiration, the students needed to build a sleigh that could safely and softly land on the Martian surface without dropping its precious cargo of presents.  Using a zip line we strung up in the DLC, the students came up with some ingenious designs using only a cardboard box, some masking tape and a plastic bag, which many groups used as a parachute to slow the sleighs descent.  We will be revisiting aerodynamics and drag when we start our flight unit later in the year.

As part of our Sky Science unit, the students watched the Matt Damon film, The Martian.  We learned about many of the harsh conditions that people will face as we start to travel to the Red planet in the next five to ten years.  Sandstorms, radiation exposure and lack of oxygen, as well as psychological factors such as loneliness and separation, will be constant struggles for all astronauts making the 3+ month trip to Mars.

On behalf of all of the grade 6 teachers at Simons Valley School, we wish you a happy holidays and a restful break.  See you in 2020!

Mr. Cull
