Friday November 28, 2019 - Week in Review

Dear Grade 6 Parents

Thank you to all of the families that made it out to our Night of Gathering and Giving, and an extra special thanks to the grade 6 students that volunteered to MC the presentation and run the various giving activities.  The evening was a huge success!  See the feature on CTV news last night (skip to 11:40)
https://calgary.ctvnews.ca/video?binId=1.2099013

In this month's edition of the Hidden Valley/ Hanson Ranch Community Newsletter, the Hon. Josephine Pon wrote about her visit with the grade 6 students at Simons Valley School.

November

"Also last month, I was honoured to visit the wonderful Grade 6 class at Simons Valley School. The students were eager to hear about a life in public service, and the daily routine of an MLA and Minister. Our Grade 6 classes are observing their government units as part of their social studies classes this year. It was my pleasure to spend time with our students, and tell them about my duties as their representative!"

We moved from our measurement unit, looking at perimeter and perimeter formulas, to our geometry unit.  We have been looking at identifying angles (acute, right, obtuse and reflex) and how to use a protractor to measure angles.

The students started a research project learning about the Canadian government's plan to ban single-use plastics by 2021.  The class was split into a group supporting this ban and the other group against the ban.  We will be debating this topic (let it be resolved that Canada should ban single-use plastics) next week.

Have a relaxing weekend!
Mr Cull

Friday November 22, 2019 - Week In Review

Dear 6B Parents

Thank you to all of the parents that were able to make it to our Student-Led conferences yesterday and today.  It is always nice to have a chat and it is a valuable experience for students to show off their hard work.

We moved on to our measurement unit in math this week, looking at how to convert millimeters to centimeters to meters, etc.  We learned that the metric system was designed to allow easy conversions using the power of ten and by moving the decimal place to make greater or smaller numbers as you move from one unit to the next.  After looking at perimeter at the start of next week, we will be moving on to angles and triangles.

The students completed their perspective drawing project this week by finishing draft #2, completing a rubric grading themselves on perspective, detail, and composition and by writing up a paragraph on how they improved.  Looking at their work, it is obvious that no matter where they started improvement can be made with deliberate practice.

Have a great weekend!
Mr. Cull

Friday November 15, 2019 - Week in Review

Dear 6A Parents,

This week we started our work on how to write a great story, by dissecting the elements that make up engaging fiction.  Using the Empowering Writers program, we started by looking at the four ways you can write an interesting beginning; with action, dialogue, thought/ question, and sound effects.  By exploring some of their favorite novels, the students learned that most stories and chapter beginnings use one or more of these approaches.  Next week we will move from finding and sharing examples of these story starters into writing our own beginnings.

We have been reviewing division and estimation this week in math.  Using the standard long division method as a starting place, we then looked at a less familiar short division approach.  Students that struggle to remember the steps to long division (divide, multiply, subtract and bring down), often find short division to be less complicated.  See the link below to understand how short division works.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLze82Zcc4Y

To conclude our look at the Provincial Government, the students have been creating a Flip-Up Legislature.  We identified 14 different positions or procedures important to running the Alberta Legislature and using the format of a flip-up book, we created "flip-ups" explaining these 14 parts. Students need to include four facts as well as a relevant picture for each.

I look forward to seeing you all at the Student-Led Conferences next Thursday evening or Friday morning.

Have a great weekend,
Mr. Cull

Friday November 8, 2019 - Week in Review

Dear Grade 6 Parents

Congratulations to all of the grade 6 students on their performance today at the Remembrance Day Assembly.  Their hard work, commitment, and focus was apparent throughout the assembly.  Special thanks to A.B. Dizon from the Royal Canadian Navy for his talk about the history of the Canadian armed forces and to Martin Cull for playing the Last Post and Reveille during the assembly.

This week we have been looking at using the CUBES method to solve math word problems.  Following the CUBES steps ensure that important information is identified in the word problem and that irrelevant information is discarded.

Image result for cubes word problem strategy

The students did their first write of a newspaper article this week as part of our preparations for the written part of the PAT.  With little background information about the important elements that are used in a newspaper article, the students wrote about the annual Pumpkin Regatta in Windsor Nova Scotia.  Now that we have a base example of their writing, we will start lessons on including catch headlines, quotes, the 5Ws, etc into our articles.

Have a great weekend,
Mr. Cull

Pack in Pack Out Lunch
Starting this year, we have been attempting to reduce our SVS ecological footprint by moving towards a “Pack In and Pack Out” philosophy. Once a student has eaten their lunch or snack, the packaging of that item will be put back into lunch kits and returned home for recycling/ composting. In continuing to support this positive change, please provide a locking baggie for items such as apple cores, yogurt tubes etc. The baggie will be returned home with the student each day for composting at home and then should be added back into the lunch kit for the next day. Help us make a difference!

Friday November 1, 2019 - Week in Review

Dear Grade 6 Parents,

The highlight of the week was our trip to the Edmonton Legislature on Wednesday.  After arriving, the students participated in a Mock Legislative debate, complete with costumes.  The students then had an opportunity to explore the history of democracy and the Legislature itself in the museum before watching a "movie in the round" about the history of Alberta.  After lunch, we toured the legislature building, learning about former Premiers and Lieutenant Governors, as well as the ceremonial mace made from plumbing parts that was used for over 50 years.  Our trip concluded by being introduced in the chamber during question period, before watching the debate between Rachel Notley and Jason Kenny.  You can watch our introduction and question period by following the link below.

http://assemblyonline.assembly.ab.ca/Harmony/en/PowerBrowser/PowerBrowserV2/20191031/-1/12008

Our Halloween activities on Thursday included a bobbing for apples stem challenge.  Each group of three had to design a device that could scoop apples out of a barrel using only, tape, pipe cleaners, paperclips, straws and a popsicle stick.  The winning group from 6A/B was able to scope 21 apples in 30 seconds.

Have a great weekend!
