Friday September 27, 2019 - Week in Review

Dear Parents of 6B,

*Orange Shirt on Monday*

We have had a very physical week in grade 6.  Despite the chilly weather, the students had a great day on Thursdays Track and Field event at the Foothills Athletic Park.  The students participated in the long jump, ball throw and either the 60m, 300m or 4 x 100m relay.  Thank you to Ms. Latham for all her hard work in putting this event together.

We have been reviewing our numeracy skills this week with a look at place value, numeric, word and expanded form and adding and subtracting.  We will be having a small quiz on these concepts a week Monday (October 7th).

In preparation for our field trip to the Apple store this upcoming Wednesday, the students have been working on writing a fractured fairytale.  Using a classic fairytale as their guide, the students need to either, write the story from a different point of view, change the role of the female character or introduce a "twist" in the storyline that fractured the events.  We will be learning to animate these stories using the Apple Keynote application next week.

Have a great weekend,
Mr. Cull

September 20, 2019 - Week in Review

Dear 6B Parents and Students

This week we have been working on building our research skills and how to check for credible sources, especially on the internet.  The students learned that finding two or more sources that corroborate the information increases the likelihood that the facts are true.  The students also worked on gathering quotes, paraphrasing and summarizing information from a newspaper article.

We concluded the first part of our Patterns and Algebra unit with a quiz covering all of the lessons we have completed so far.  This quiz will be marked and returned early next week and we ask that you sign it and return it back to school.

The students have been creating Federal, Provincial and Local Bylaws this week as part of our local government unit.  The entire class came up with three laws for our "country" and in groups of two cities created three provincial laws and then three bylaws for their cities.  Next week we will be looking at how taxes are collected to pay for all of the services (police, transit, garbage/ recycling, etc), provided by local governments.

Have a great weekend!
Mr. Cull

September 13, 2019 - Week in Review

Good Afternoon Students and Parents,

We have been learning about creating a "T" table to identify a pattern and how to write a rule for a series of numbers this week (i.e 2, 6, 18 Pattern Rule: Start at 2 and multiply by 3 each time).  We also learned how variables are used in algebra and how they substitute for a number (i.e n + 5 = 8, so n = 3).  We will be having a small quiz next Thursday to check the students understanding of these concepts.

To kick off our unit on Local Government the students have been drawing their own city maps in groups of 3 or 4.  Each city needs to be aware of residential, commercial and industrial land use, and must also include essential buildings and services including schools, hospitals, public transportation, recycling/ compost facilities, etc.  Next week we will be looking at city bylaws and how property taxes are collected and used to fund city services.

Have a great weekend!
Mr. Cull

September 6, 2019 - Week in Review

Dear Grade 6 Parents and Students,

We have had a great first week getting to know each other and learning about the exciting things we will be doing this year in grade 6.  Thank you to all of the parents who reached out to me this week and I look forward to meeting with all of you during the Parent/ Teacher conferences on September 19th and 20th.

We worked this week on learning about our strengths as learners, focusing on visual learning, auditory and kinesthetic learning.  The students completed three tests to see how well they could remember a series of random items using their eyes, ears and sense of touch.  We then took this information and started graphing our results.  We will be posting these results around the room and talking about the types of projects that are successful for each learning style.

To help us get to know the students, we started our "All About Me" project, which began by having the students fill in a graphic organizer about their families, backgrounds,  favorite foods, movies, books, etc.  The students then started a "sketch note" about themselves that will be posted so other students can get to know them.
